Little Switzerland

Description

Hailed as “Virginia’s Little Switzerland,” Highland County is bound to please visitors with intriguing natural history delights. With the highest mean elevation of any other county in the Commonwealth, many sites on this Loop offer habitat for birds more typical of northern climates. In addition to these sites, visitors are encouraged to travel some of the more scenic roads within the county. Many of these roads are situated in magnificent wildlife habitat, but offer only a few pull-offs and access points for wildlife-viewing. Most of the sites on this loop are along or adjacent to US 250 and US 220, which intersect in Monterey. US 220 follows along valleys, pastures, open fields, and mountainside views, offering a scenic drive through the county. If you should visit Highland County in March, you can even witness the making of real maple syrup.
