To determine the correct stocking rate for triploid grass carp the approximate total pond surface acreage must be calculated and then the percentage or degree of vegetation coverage must be determined. Vegetation coverage should be ranked as slight (< 30 %), moderate (30-60 %), or heavy (> 60 %). As a general guideline triploid grass carp should be stocked as follows:
Slight weed infestation – | 2 fish/acre |
Moderate weed infestation – | 5 fish/acre |
Heavy weed infestation – | 10 fish/acre |
In small ponds (< 1 acre), it is recommended that a minimum of 3 triploid grass carp be stocked to account for any potential mortality or predation on the newly stocked fish.
