Updates Related to COVID-19 »

Urban Program Waters

In response to growing concern about the spread of COVID-19, DGIF will be making the following changes to the 2020 Trout Stocking Program. Beginning April 3, daily trout stockings will no longer be posted on the DGIF website or Trout Line. All open waters will continue to recieve their full alottment of trout stockings as conditions allow. Heritage Day, scheduled for April 4 is cancelled. All Pre-Announced stockings including Urban Program Waters and the Youth-Only Stocked Trout Program will be rescheduled and will no longer be announced before hand. Additionally, trout stockings at the Department’s three Fee Fishing Areas (Clinch Mountain, Crooked Creek, and Douthat Lake) will not begin in early April as planned, however, the Fee Areas will remain open to fishing. During this time the requirement for the daily use permit will be waived but normal licensing requirements will remain in place. Stockings at the Fee Areas will resume as soon as possible. We continue to encourage everyone to continue to get outdoors and remind you to follow social distancing guidleines. Updates on the trout stocking program will be posted as they become available on the DGIF website or by calling the Trout Line at 434-525-3474. Please check this list of waters that are closed to fishing and that will not be stocked until further notice.

Waters in the Urban Fishing Program will be considered designated stocked trout waters from November 1 through April 30 only (trout license required). A trout license is not required from May 1 through October 31. In addition trout may be creeled from these waters year-round and the trout creel limit is 4 per day, no fish less than 7 inches. Once a trout is taken into possession by placing in the creel (basket, bucket, stringer, cooler, etc.) it becomes part of the daily creel limit and may not be released (culled). Stocking dates for these waters will be posted the week prior to stocking.
