DGIF News- Outreach- Q1 2020

The 2020 outdoor events calendar is off to a great start! Over the last couple of weeks, staff from DGIF’s Outreach, Fisheries and Law Enforcement divisions had to opportunity to engage the public at two very popular fishing shows, The Virginia Fly Fishing Festival and the Richmond Fishing Expo, at Meadow Event Park in Doswell. Both events were extremely well attended offering DGIF the chance to answer questions from thousands of inquiring anglers.

DGIF also had the chance to highlight the new “Trout Slam” program that challenges anglers that catch a brook, brown, and rainbow trout in a day. If you would like to learn more and participate in this fun new angling initiative you can sign up at https://dwr.virginia.gov/fishing/virginia-trout-slam-challenge/.

Engaging Tomorrow’s Customers Today

In an effort to enhance the Department’s angling recruitment efforts, the Outreach Division will be partnering with Unicomm Media Group (UMG) to develop a 360° Hispanic Digital Campaign Activation Plan to include digital/social media outreach in 2020. We will be starting with spring fishing content that will be targeted for the Hispanic market. UMG is uniquely skilled at developing customized media plans with the objective of reaching the Hispanic market and to help translate an understanding of DGIF’s mission of conserving, connecting and protecting Virginia’s Wildlife and natural resources.  UMG will work hand-and-hand alongside DGIF in a supporting role to create a campaign manifesto that will help to communicate steps that will establish a solid footing in the Hispanic community. These efforts will serve as platforms for Hispanic users to interact with the DGIF and will promote weekly Spanish content to keep high interaction among Hispanic users. Vamos a pescar!

In other news, the DGIF Notes From the Field E-mail Newsletters surpassed 450,000 subscribers! This is a huge accomplishment for outreach and we would be remiss if we didn’t thank Tim Tassitano for all his hard work developing new and exciting content! Can’t wait to hit the 1,000,000 mark next year!

DGIF’s Angling Ed Coordinator, Alex McCrickard and his wife Allison (Ali), are the proud new parents of a baby girl, Collins Conway McCrickard. She was born on Sunday morning, February 2nd, at 5 lbs. 15 oz.. Alex will be away on paternity leave until sometime in March but will be checking emails on and off, so please feel free to send them some well-wishes.
