Richmond Falcon Cam

Falcon Cam Screenshot Contest

  • May 28th, 2020

Watching the Richmond peregrine falcons on DWR’s falcon cam live stream just got a little bit more fun! Now that there’s a peregrine falcon chick in a starring role, we’re running a screen-grab competition on the DWR Instagram page, @virginiawildlife, looking for fantastic still frames from the falcon cam from now until June 15. You could win a falcon-fierce bandanna, a falcon notebook, and a free one-year subscription to Virginia Wildlife magazine!

All you have to do is watch the falcon family on the falcon cam and take a screenshot of a great moment. It could be funny, cute, or dramatic! Then post the photo on your Instagram account, tag @virginiawildlife, and use the hashtag #rvafalcons. That’s it—you’re entered!

The chick has begun developing feathers and is getting more mobile with every day, so keep your eyes peeled and you may catch a moment worth screenshotting! Here are some tips for getting a great grab:

  1. If possible, keep the video stream up on a second monitor or screen while at home or at work. This way you can easily detect when there is some action about to happen.
  2. Don’t be alarmed if you see the camera zoomed in or out more so than the last time you checked in. We will be adjusting the camera focus periodically to give viewers more opportunities to get screen grabs from different perspectives.
  3. If you want to catch a feeding, keep careful watch in the morning between 6:45am and 8:00am. Although the adults provide feedings at random intervals throughout the day, morning feedings within that time frame have been the most reliable so far.
  4. If you are using a Windows device you can use the Print Screen (or Prt Scn) button to easily take a screen shot. Mac users can get a grab by holding down the command, shift, and # 3 keys simultaneously.

Remember, snap a screen-grab of the falcons, post it to Instagram tagging @virginiawildlife and with the #rvafalcons hashtag before June 15, and you could win!
