Pond Management: Fish Stocking Tables

Table 1: Largemouth Bass, Sunfish, and Channel Catfish Fingerlings

Species Number per Acre Minimum Size (inches) Time of Year to Stock
Bluegill1 350 1 August or September
Redear2 150 1 August or September
Channel Catfish 50 2 August or September
Largemouth Bass 50 2 The following June (after the sunfish are stocked)
Largemouth Bass 50 2 1 year after bass are first stocked
  1. Bluegill can be stocked alone at 500 per acre if redear are not wanted for diversity.
  2. Be sure you are being sold redear, not pumpkinseed (sometimes called redgill sunfish)

Table 2: Fingerling Stocking Rates for Low Density/Trophy Bass Pond

Species Number per Acre Minimum Size (inches) Time of Year to Stock
Bluegill 750 1 August or September
Redear 250 1 August or September
Fathead Minnows 2000 1 The following June (after the sunfish are stocked)
Largemouth Bass1 25 2 The following June (after the sunfish are stocked)
Golden Shiners2 2000 3–4 Annually every spring if desired
  1. Stock F1 strain bass, which is a first-generation cross between northern and pure-strain Florida largemouth bass. The F1 bass (sometimes-called tiger bass) are available from most commercial hatcheries.
  2. Supplemental stocking of forage is optional but can increase growth rates of largemouth bass. Fathead minnows can be supplemented for golden shiners but a larger stocking rate (3,000/acre) may be needed for the smaller sized fish

Notes: Trophy bass management works best with a supplemental feeding program for the bluegill and annual harvest of smaller bass (less than 13 inches) two years post bass stocking.

Table 3: Largemouth Bass and Sunfish Adults

Bluegill3 70 3 April
Redear 30 3 April
Largemouth Bass 20 12 April
Fathead Minnows 500 1 April
  1. Bluegill can be stocked at 100 per acre if redear are not wanted for diversity.

Table 4: Channel Catfish Fingerlings

Species Number per Acre Minimum Size (inches) Time of Year to Stock
Channel Catfish 100 2 Summer

Table 5: Trout

Species Number per Acre Minimum Size (inches) Time of Year to Stock

Rainbow Trout 200 less than 8 when water temperature is below 70°F
