Hunting Mentor Program: New Hunters Looking for a Mentor

Are you interested in hunting, but don’t know where to start? Hunting is a great way to source local food, assist with wildlife conservation efforts, and enjoy the outdoors. For new, adult hunters who are interested in learning the skills and developing the resources that make for a successful day in the field, DWR’s Hunting Mentor Program provides guidance and advice.

An experienced mentor can help you develop the skills and resources through first-hand experiences in the field, as well as helping you prepare for a day of hunting. If you are new to hunting and would like to learn more about how hunting contributes to wildlife conservation in Virginia, we urge you to give the Hunting Mentor Program a try.

The following are requirements prior for signing up participating in the Hunting Mentor Program:

You must be 18 years of age or older
You must be able to pass a background check
You must have reliable transportation
You must be physically able* to handle firearms and, archery equipment, and walk on uneven terrain/surfaces
You must be willing and able to operate in remote areas

Novice Hunter Interest Form

Please fill out this form if you are interested in being a Novice Hunter and being paired with a DWR Mentor and/or participating in Mentored Hunts and/or if you are interested in any of DWR’s other hunting workshops.

Please be advised that filling out this form is not the Hunting Mentor Program application. The application for the Hunting Mentor Program is available during the month of July each year. By filling out this form, your contact information will be added to DWR’s Hunting Mentor Program, Mentored Hunts, and other hunting workshop/event distribution lists (depending upon your selections) and you will be contacted when opportunities matching your selections are available.

- DWR Hunting Mentor Program (1:1 with a DWR Mentor from September–April. Application period open annually from July–August. Must apply to be considered).
