Description
Elevation: 1050 ft.
This large multi-use park is situated within the City of Roanoke. In addition to ballfields, tennis courts, picnic shelters, and playscapes, this site offers the nature enthusiast trails along riparian woodlands, creek bed bottoms, forested hillsides, and open, grassy meadows. Avian nesting residents within the wooded areas include rufous-sided towhee, wood thrush, hooded warbler, eastern wood-pewee, and yellow-billed cuckoo. Along the creek bed, look for yellow-crowned night heron, green heron, and Louisiana waterthrush. Along forest edges, look for eastern phoebe, eastern bluebird, and Baltimore oriole. Barred owl and eastern screech owl take residence within these woods, probably drawn to the large sycamore, cherry, walnut, magnolia, and oak trees throughout. The creek bed is an excellent spot to find bullfrog, northern watersnake, and red-backed salamander.
