Leesylvania State Park

Description

Leesylvania State Park is a 500-acre peninsula on the shores of the tidal Potomac River. It is flanked north and south by two tidal tributaries, Neabsco Creek and Powells Creek. The Park’s eastern shoreline fronts the Potomac River. The waterfront setting attracts great numbers and varieties of water birds such as large waders, terns, gulls, cormorants, and both diving and puddle ducks. Ospreys and bald eagles are commonly viewed here as well. Wetlands along two tidal creeks increase the diversity of water-dependent species. The park sponsors canoe trips from April through October to facilitate birdwatching opportunities in Powells Creek. In addition to the wetland and water habitats, the park has six miles of trail through old deciduous forests where species of warblers, vireos, woodpeckers, owls, hawks, and other woodland birds can be viewed. This habitat can be particularly rewarding for birders during spring and fall migrations. Visitors should be sure to stop by the park office or visitor center for additional information and orientation about the park and its wildlife watching opportunities.
