Montgomery Hall Park

Description

Elevation: 1484 ft.

Located in a quiet residential neighborhood, Montgomery Hall Park is a large, multi-use park that includes hiking and biking trails, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and ballfields. The park is chiefly comprised of hardwood forest interspersed with pines. This is a good inner-city spot to find migrant warblers, thrushes, and vireos. In the spring, birders may find Blackburnian, cerulean, and Cape May warblers. The fall may hold treasures such as Connecticut and Nashville warblers, and Philadelphia vireo. Resident species include pileated, red-bellied, and downy woodpeckers, northern flicker, Carolina chickadee, white-breasted nuthatch, and eastern screech-owl. In the summer, look for nesting birds such as brown thrasher, gray catbird, eastern towhee, and yellow-breasted chat. Wintering birds include white-throated sparrow, dark-eyed junco, and yellow-bellied sapsucker. Woodland butterflies such as common wood nymph can be found fluttering about woodland edges, while eastern tiger swallowtail and red-spotted purple flit about wildflowers in bloom. A checklist of birds observed here by Mrs. Yulee Larner is available at the park. Also, be on the lookout for deer which have been seen lying in clearings by the road.
