Sweet Run State Park

Description

Sweet Run, Virginia’s 42nd state park, opened in May 2023. Although still under development, the park contains 11 miles of public hiking trails and 9 miles of equestrian trails as of 2025. These trails meander through hardwood forests, meadows, mountains, and along the Sweet Run and Piney Run streams, providing visitors with a rich diversity of potential wildlife sightings. History buffs will enjoy touring the ruins of a 19th century farming community and a restored 1840s farmhouse.

In winter, expect to find Dark-eyed Junco, White-throated Sparrow, Northern Harrier, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, both kinglet species, and Brown Creepers. Spring migration brings in uncommon warblers like Tennessee, Nashville, and Cape May in addition to the abundant species like Black-and-white and American Redstart. The lucky observer might see an Alder Flycatcher, Gray-cheeked Thrush, or Osprey. Summer residents include Broad-winged Hawk, Grasshopper Sparrow, Great Crested Flycatcher, Tree Swallow, and Blue Grosbeak. The meadows are home to pollinators like the Spicebush Swallowtail, Silvery Checkerspot, and Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Fall migration is another time to catch warblers, vireos, and thrushes missed during the spring, such as Swainson’s Thrush, Blue-headed Vireo, and Magnolia Warbler. Eastern Bluebird, Common Raven, five species of woodpecker, Red-shouldered Hawks, White-tailed Deer, and Eastern Gray Squirrels are just a few of the year-round residents.

Notes:

  • Creek crossings without bridges are required on Butterfly Alley, Bypass, Lower Sweet Run, and Piney Run trails. Proceed with caution, especially in high water.
