The Falls

Description

Nottoway Falls Park, also known simply as “The Falls,” is one of Lunenburg County’s most scenic spots. The open water in this area is attractive to waterfowl. Wood ducks and mallards can be seen year round. Winter brings in more waterfowl when gadwall, American widgeon, northern shoveler and northern pintail arrive. In summer, great blue and green herons can be seen stalking these banks for their next meal, while slaty and widow skimmers cruise the shoreline. A small colony of barn swallows nests under the bridge just downstream from the dam.

The woods that line the shoreline host summer tanagers, red-eyed and white-eyed vireos, acadian flycatchers, and eastern wood-pewees in the summer months amongst the more regular residents, including red-bellied and downy woodpeckers. Migration could bring any number of surprises, especially after a heavy rain forces flying birds into the treetops.

Notes:

  • The road to the parking area is unpaved with deep ruts and potholes. High clearance vehicles are recommended.
