Virginia Birding Classic: The Big Sit

Introducing: The Virginia Birding Classic’s version of “The Big Sit”!

The newest category of competition in The Classic, The Big Sit pairs everything you love about birding and everything you love about tailgate parties into one perfect day! With no limit to the size of the team, you can include everyone from your closest friends and family, your coworkers, and your second cousin’s best friend’s hairdresser! The more the merrier!

How to participate:

  • Fill out the form below.
  • Register yourself using the link that will be emailed to you when you submit the form.
  • Forward along the invitation email that you will receive to anyone you want to join you!
  • Use Explore the Wild to find a public lands location for your team’s Big Sit.
  • Choose a day between April 15 and May 15, 2025.
  • Identify a 30-foot diameter circle within that property’s boundaries.
  • Set up your chair and start birding!

Your team members can come and go as they please, as can you! Just remember to always have someone there designated as the record keeper and logging sightings using eBird according to the eBird instructions. Once your 24 hours is up—or you and your team decide to call it a day—pack up, finalize your eBird trip report, and submit it by emailing a link to max.goldman@dwr.virginia.gov!

The Big Sit is a great option for those who would like to participate and compete, but have trouble getting around, have small children, have limited time to participate, are just getting started and want a big team of support, or just can’t narrow down their list of team members. This is a great team building event for your group or company and—as always—all of the proceeds go to the Virginia Wildlife Grant Program!

The first 20 members to register for each team will receive a Limited Release Virginia Birding Classic hat! Hats are available for purchase for any team members after the first 20.
