How to Remove/Submit Bear Teeth for Aging

Successful bear hunters must, by law, submit a premolar tooth from any bear they harvest in Virginia. DWR uses the teeth to determine the bear’s age, which helps with monitoring and managing bear populations.

If you check your bear at a check station, the attendant will extract a premolar tooth and submit it with your check card.

If you check your bear by phone, internet, or mobile app, you will need to remove and submit the tooth yourself. (It’s easier than it sounds!)

Make certain the tooth you submit includes the root.

Please see below for a one-page instruction sheet and a video, produced by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, that explains how to remove and submit the appropriate teeth. Submit a single premolar (with the root) from either the upper or the lower jaw.
