How to Remove/Submit Bear Teeth for Aging

Successful bear hunters must, by law, submit a premolar tooth from any bear they harvest in Virginia. DWR uses the teeth to determine the bear’s age, which helps with monitoring and managing bear populations.

Please see below for a one-page instruction sheet and a video, produced by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, that explains how to remove and submit the appropriate teeth. Submit a single premolar (with the root) from either the upper or the lower jaw.
