Identifying Characteristics

- Relatively large head when compared to body size
- Emarginate (slightly forked) caudal fin shape
- Adipose fin present
- Pectoral spine is very straight
Distribution
White Catfish are native to most of Virginia, excluding watersheds that drain into the Gulf of Mexico and streams on Virginia’s Eastern Shore that drain into the Atlantic Ocean.

Diet
Like other catfish species the White Catfish is omnivorous and will consume terrestrial insects, aquatic macroinvertebrates, other fish, and plants.
Habitat
White Catfish are more common in Virginia’s large tidal ecosystems but can also be occasionally found well inland. In both areas they seek out open waters with muddy bottoms.
