Upcoming Events: Virginia Outdoor Women

This is a complete muzzleloader course designed for women 18 years and above, with class discussion, live muzzleloader lessons on selection of different types of guns, cleaning, and storage. A live fire opportunity at the Freedom Outdoors Range is included. Participants will be eligible to be drawn for a mentored muzzleloader deer hunt within the 2026 hunting season on the Eastern Shore of Virginia (date TBA). If you have equipment, please bring it to class UNLOADED AND CASED.

VOW Course: This event qualifies as a VOW @ the Field 2, General Workshop with Live Fire (any species). This event can be used to complete the Hunting Certification in the Virginia Outdoor Women (VOW) Program. This event is open to all registrants.

This beginner-friendly class covers the fundamentals of archery, proper stance, shooting technique, and safe range etiquette. If you have your own archery equipment, feel free to bring what you have! Otherwise, all equipment will be provided.

Basic Pistol Course - $150 FEE Applies!

This course will cover gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, overview of ammunition and ammunition types, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, pistol maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety. Course will include live fire on an open range at Cavalier Rifle and Pistol Club. This course will satisfy the training requirements for a concealed carry permit (CCP) application in the state of Virginia. Participants should bring their personal pistol and at least 50 rounds of factory ammunition appropriate for their pistol. We encourage participants to bring their own firearms for this event!

If you do not own a pistol, but would still like to take this course, DWR will be providing loaners for this event and will also provide the appropriate ammunition. If this is the case, please notify us at least 10 days in advance of the course so we can ensure we have equipment available!

PLEASE NOTE: This course does have a FEE ($150)! A link for payment will be sent out via email to registrants the week before the event. Payment must be received prior to taking the class!

Please bring your own lunch/snacks/water to this event! Sunscreen/hat/bug spray recommended!

Join us and learn basic deer hunting skills. We will discuss deer biology and habits, scouting and hunting techniques, game laws, tree-stand and firearm safety, as well as what to do after you harvest an animal. Our afternoon session will be mostly outdoors, so dress appropriately for the forecasted weather. A small number of our class will be randomly selected to have the opportunity to participate in a mentored deer hunt at the Radford Arsenal and Matthews State Forest in December. Participants must be 18 years of age or older to be considered for the Radford Arsenal mentored hunt. Participants in all other mentored hunts must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by a family member or guardian. Range days will be held prior to the hunt to prepare those selected for the mentored hunt. Firearms, ammunition, eye and ear protection will be provided. Additional mentored hunting opportunities will be available for those not selected for the Radford Arsenal and Matthews State Forest Hunts.

Offered by Central Virginia Chapter of Quail Forever, this event is designed for women who are curious about hunting but don’t know where to start. These beginner-friendly experiences offer hands-on instruction in firearm safety, hunting skills, and conservation, all in a supportive, no-pressure environment.

Led by passionate women mentors and guides, you’ll gain confidence in the field, connect with like-minded ladies, and learn how hunting plays a vital role in wildlife and habitat conservation—no experience or gear needed, just a willingness to learn.

Every attendee will receive a one-year membership to Quail Forever, education in conservation and species education, DWR regulations, parlances of the field, bird dog demo, field first aid, gear review and how to clean and prepare your harvest. Open to all women beginners, 16 years and up, current Quail Forever membership not required. No equipment is required.

VOW Course: This event qualifies as a VOW @ the Field 3, Hunting Workshop (any species/active hunt). This event can be used to complete the Hunting Certification in the Virginia Outdoor Women (VOW) Program. This event is open to all registrants.

Organized by Sisters of the Tent, the Halloween Campout at First Landing State Park may include hiking, biking, beaching, fishing, and more!
