Amelia Wildlife Management Area

Description

The Amelia Wildlife Management Area is primarily upland, while there is some low-ground along the Appomattox River. Formerly farm land, much of the area remains open and is actively managed to enhance wildlife habitat. Mature upland hardwood groves and pine stands, and bottomland hardwoods make up the forested land on Amelia. The terrain is gently rolling and elevation ranges from 200 to 300 feet. The major portion of the area, including a lake and all facilities, is bounded on the north and east by the Appomattox River. A small tract, southeast of the main tract, also adjoins the river.

Wild turkey and northern bobwhite are common here. Keep a keen eye to the sky as red-shouldered and red-tailed hawks are just as likely as black and turkey vultures overhead. In addition, tanagers, blue grosbeaks, and a diversity of sparrow and woodpecker species are also found in this area. Near the water features, watch for a variety of damsel- and dragonflies and check the open grassy areas and scrubby edges for many species of butterflies.
