The picnic area in Dark Horse Hollow is encircled by mixed deciduous forest with a rhododendron understory. Stony Fork Creek is quite broad and shallow where it passes through the picnic area, making the abundant trout easy to see. Common woodland bird species are also readily seen in the area.

From Big Walker Mountain Lookout, follow US 52 South for 6.3 miles to the picnic area on the left.
