The Top 20 WMAs to Hunt for Squirrel This Fall

Squirrel hunting in Virginia is fun and action-packed, especially during the fall. If you are looking to take advantage of this season but don’t have a place to go, then look no further!

Some of the best squirrel hunting in the Commonwealth can be found on DGIF’s Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Adding up to over 200,000 acres, these WMAs are located all across the state and provide a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities.

One WMA with an abundance of good squirrel habitat is C. F. Phelps in Fauquier County. On Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 9 am to 4 pm, hunter education instructors will be available for hunting advice and assistance at a Hunters Help Station on the Phelps WMA. It will be located at the parking area next to 5669 Sumerduck Rd., Remington, VA 22734.

Notice (posted 9/5/2019): With much of Coastal Virginia under Tropical Storm Warnings/Watches ahead of Hurricane Dorian, the Department of Game & Inland Fisheries urges caution in utilizing public access facilities.

Visitors to Wildlife Management Areas should be aware of the potential for downed trees as well as flooded or washed out roadways. Do not attempt to drive through floodwaters. Facilities may be closed as conditions dictate.
